First of all what the hell were you thinking. Did L Ron Hubbard tell you to do it. That's who I would blame. Just like Battlefield Earth. Doing Hairspray is lose lose. Even its good your not has good has Harvey Firestein. Someone who belongs to "mainstream" religion. Years ago you made good movies maybe the Scientology has messed with your mojo. The only thing going for you is the return of dancing in the movie, your movies when they have dancing usually succeed.

Going in drag can work. It was the Bust Out role (pun intended) for Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies and probably didn't hurt Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot either.
My guess is that while Travolta won't be a Harvey Fierstein he might actually be a pretty good Edna. I expect he might even protray the role a little differently.
Mix in Queen Latifah and it might be a pretty good show.
