Minnesota High School Wrestling

There is story on Espn.com today about how the Minnesota High School Athletic Association has suspended the High School wrestling season to control an outbreak of herpes. Now common logic would say, shouldn't you just not allow the cheerleaders to travel with the teams. They are called mat maids for a reason. But it turns out that skin to skin contact can cause the transfer of Herpes Simplex 1. I hope that all the people infected get better and Minnesota can get back to ice-fishing and whatever they do up there.

It's a Small World

This last Friday night, me and some friends decided to act like tourists and head to Margaritaville at the Flamingo Hilton to have dinner and drinks. We normally stay off the strip, especially on Friday nights. I am sitting at the bar with Sarah and a co-worker of mine named Kieth, waiting on my Oklahoma friends to join us, when a man walks up to me and says are you Big H, from Canton, South Dakota, and I said yes. He goes I was in your Spanish II class. Well I almost fell out of my chair. Beau Bobeck was one class behind me, I would have never recognized him since he had grown a beard. Canton High School had around 350 kids total in a town with one stoplight. To see someone from that small pool of people, in the vast sea of people in Las Vegas is amazing. I apologize I have not been blogging much lately but, I have been super busy at work.

Cam Cameron

The Dolphins just hired Cam Cameron as their Head Coach. I hope they are ready for four years of losing football. Cam Cameron was the Head Coach at my Alma mater. He finished with a glorious 18-37 record. He actually had the gall to change the logo and colors of the team. Instead of Crimson and Cream, we got red and white with a snazzy new IU logo to replace the traditional IU logo with the I in the center of the U.

I expect he'll last a two years, now that Sean Payton has raised the bar.

The Worlds Oldest Profession

Not good news for Michigan State University Law School. A 2L has been charged with running a brothel in a upscale Manhattan Apartment. His lawyer says he was just interning for a defense attorney and was doing what his boss told him to do. Yeah Right, could be the lamest defense I ever heard of. Well I take that back, I prosecuted two crack dealers who said they were in South Dakota from Long Beach, CA for vacation in February. I guess both lawyers went to the ACME Law School

I Read it for the Articles

Playboy gets a bad rap from the religious conservatives in this country, they call it pornography, I call it good journalism. Every month Playboy seems to surprise even more, maybe its an historical piece written by Gary Wills (by the way my sister took his history class at Northwestern) or a great interview on some famous person from Hollywood, business, politics, or sports.

This month was no exception. The big interview was of T. Boone Pickens, for all of you out there living under a rock, this is the Oil Billionaire who gave Oklahoma State 180 million dollars. His insights into our global energy crisis was top notch. Also this month there was a great interview with the anchors that made Sportscenter the best news show on cable television. The sayings created by those sports/comics are legendary. Find me someone who hasn't repeated a line uttered on Sportscenter and I will show you an person who lives under a rock.

As an aside the pictorials this month were terrible. Pam Anderson, its getting a little old and airbrushed to be still taking her clothes off.

The Lesser of Two Evils

Tonight was a very tough game for me to watch. I really don't like either team. I'll start first with the winners:

Florida
I was not a fan of Urban Meyers campaigning to get in the big game. Lets not forget that he lost to a three loss Auburn team and almost lost to South Carolina at home. Most people will now forgive his campaign because of the dominate win he put on the Buckeyes who had almost everyone in the nation on their bandwagon. Everybody but me.

Buckeyes
My hatred of the Buckeyes can be traced to the moment of its first inception. Since I grew up in the central plains of South Dakota, the Michigan-Ohio State Rivalry meant very little to me. But what I observed as a sophomore at Indiana, makes he hate the Buckeyes to the core of my soul. In the Fall of 1996, the Big Bad Buckeyes came to Bloomington to play Indiana, like most Indiana Football games it was a blowout. The Buckeyes were in mass attendance because of the close proximity to their campus, about 4 hours, and the availability of tickets, IU Football never sells out. But this game had special meaning, if the Buckeyes won they clinched the Rose Bowl for New Years 1997.
Well not to build up any suspense, they killed us. The few IU fans left in the stadium got to witness the following event. The Buckeye fans rushed the field and tore down our Goal Posts. Let me repeat that, a team that was probably was a three touchdown favorite playing a team with 4 wins had their own Goal Posts ripped down. It was the most classless act I have ever witnessed. It must be the little league good game ritual, high school wrestler in me, but when you just pinned a kid in the first 30 seconds of a match, you don't rub it in their face, you go to the center of the mat shake their hand and walk off. So Congratulations Florida tonight you helped bring equilibrium to the world and busted the Buckeyes.

I have three Favorite Teams. IU everything, whoever is playing Purdue in basketball, and who ever is playing Ohio State in Football. Also a quick update, the casinos probably made a fortune tonight, Ohio State was a 7 1/2 favorite and the money line was Ohio State minus 300, Florida plus 250. I will report the Casino win later in the week when the Nevada Gaming Commission reports the figures.

My Brother from another Mother

Some of the readers of my blog may not know this about me, but in addition to my older sister I have an older brother named Gabe. Gabe is not biologically related to my family, but is closer to me and my family than actual blood relatives. Gabe also blogs and I have added his link to my page, Progressive Republican. Gabe is a great writer with a sharp political mind and satirical streak in him that would have made him a great writer for SNL. His current post is on Sen. Bryd's antics at the recent Senate swearing in ceremony where he may have been drunk. Sen. Kennedy actually made fun of his antics, which is saying a lot because One More Teddy is probably the biggest lush in the world.

This post reminded me of my own Senate drinking stories. During the summer of 1996, I interned on Capital Hill working for the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. It was a very large committee and one of the senior Democratic members was Sen. Wendell Ford of Kentucky. Sen. Ford served in the Senate for 24 years after serving as the Governor of Kentucky. One of my various duties was to bring coffee and water to the members before and during committee meetings. On one of my first days there, Sen. Ford asked me for a coffee cup full of Bourbon and a spoon. Because CSPAN was there and drinking from a high ball glass would have been unprofessional. No I am not suggesting that he was a drunk, far from it, he probably just needed a little pick me up to get through a boring meeting.

Number 880 and counting

The General finally snapped Dean Smiths mark of 879 games. The perception is that this mark will not stand long. Because Coach K is not far behind at 753, but that's assuming that Bobby retires soon, I would expect Bobby to finish his contract in 2011. Even with Coach K's team winning 24-28 a year, since Tech will win around 20 a year that is only a 4-8 games a year pick up for 5 years of 20 or so games. That means Coach K will have to coach for an additional 6 seasons to pass The General, 6 seasons takes him to 2017 when he turns 70. I don't see it happening. Lets not forget The General was 24 when he assumed the head coaching duties at Army. Coach K was born in 1947, The General was born in 1940, they are closer in age than people remember.

NCAA Playoffs?

Some commentators and analysts are now going to argue for a playoff system in Div 1 football that rivals the other College Divisions Football playoffs, because of a sneaky Boise State win last night in the Fiesta Bowl. Playoffs maybe the fix to the dreaded BCS, but don't campaign solely on the Boise State win as proof.

It was a great game, and Boise State did a great job, and I don't want to take away from those kids who worked so hard. But lets face it this was the worst year in Big 12 football since the inception of the league. The winner of the Texas-OU game doe not win the Big 12 south? First time to happen, also OU was rebuilding this year with the loss of Rhett Bomar and the injury to Adrian Peterson. So its not like Boise State beat the 2000 Sooners, they beat the 2007 Sooners, not the same thing people.
