It turns out that incoming Chief of Staff Rahm Emaneul does not pay taxes on his million dollar home at 4228 North Hermitage, Chicago IL. I used to live about 6 blocks away. In the past eight months I have golfed over 20 rounds including six weeks of lessons. Today I had a major breakthrough, three pars in the same round. It was awesome, actually I blew two other putts and should have had five pars. I have six bogeys. It was amazing. It was great day. After the game I watched the Texas-Texas Tech game. Which was also amazing. My next post will be about how 12 of the first round draft picks in the NFL will come from the Big 12.

One of my favorite comedians Yakov Smirnoff has the famous line "What a Country." That line has never rung so true as today. Its not that the Dow was up four hundred points or Bernake has announced another stimulus package. Today Hustler Video released a scene from their next hit movie "Nailing Palin." Larry Flynt has found a porno star that kinda looks like the Republican Vice-President nominee and threw some glasses on her and put her in a business suit.

People are blogging all over the place that the Bristol Palin pregnancy is a scandal. I don't think so. A scandal is when a young man drives home drunk and parks his car in a river and kills a women. Last week a titan of states rights Jesse Helms passed away. Senator Helms is part of one of my best Capitol Hill stories. As an intern I was able to go on the Senate Floor when accompanying my boss Senator Larry Pressler for votes. During one of those votes, Jesse was in the Senate Cloak room when he got called for his vote.

When a Senator is called for vote, they have to walk down to the well of the Senate and tell the clerk thier vote, but not Jesse. Jesse simply stuck his head out of the cloak room and would give a thumbs up or thumbs down. Who was gonna complain. By the way the vote was for the re authorization of the Presidential Committee on Physical Fitness. Remember the Govenator's ads.

The NCAA has issued a new charge against Indiana, due to the actions of Kelvin Sampson, lack of institutional control. I can't believe I was ever excited about Kelvin taking over for Mike Davis. Last night John McCain was on the Jon Stewart Show and quoted Chairman Mao, the quote was "Its always darkest before its totally black." The reverence in his speech and mannerisms is astounding. I have been joking for years that the North Vietnamese programed him during his 7 year stay at the Hanoi Hilton. But last night was shocking. He also talks about Abraham Lincoln, who I believe to be our greatest President, and the reverence is almost half for Honest Abe. The quote is at 3 minutes and 7 seconds of the following clip.

Wikapedia shows that John has been using this quote since 2000. Hmm what was going on in 2000, oh John was runing for President. Chairman Mao died in 1976, which means maybe John heard these quotes in person. Also lets not forget that Mao may have even read the Richard Condon book since it came out 17 years before he died. The movie came out in 1962 and starred old Blue Eyes and the book was even banned in China and other communist states, there is almost no doubt Chairman Mao was aware of the book.

A kid was shot on the way home from school today in Las Vegas. We have had three school shootings including a dead student in the last month. This is a tragedythat is unexplainable. Except I have a reason. I blame the shitty parents that are raising these kids.

Some would say that I grew up in a place and time was that was very protected, but we had bad kids just like anywhere else and I would bet we had more guns. During hunting season there were atleast 25 percent of all high school boys had a shotgun in the car to go hunting after school.

Herein lies the difference. The difference is I had a father is who sat me down and we talked about gun safety. I also attended Hunter Safety course in Harrisburg, SD when I was twelve years old. My house had three guns in it and by the time I was 15, I had access to all of them. No one ever got shot. If all these kids had parents 1/3 as good as mine our world would be much better off.

Rich Little Health Scare

I had the privilege of being entertained last Friday night at the Golden Nugget by the "Dean of Impersonators" Rich Little. My father was in town for his annual Spring Break Boys club trip. It was a great show. Over the weekend Rich Little was rushed to Summerlin Hospital with a blood clot in his leg. I hope that he recovers and takes the stage again. The Las Vegas Sportsbooks will anounce later this week that the "handle" or amount wagered on the Superbowl was near one hundred million dollars and with the favorite losing and a low score the books will have made big money. Tonight HBO had a great special on about Don Rickles. He is an amazing entertainer. It's a shame that in today's world all the comedians and entertainers can't carry his jock strap. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Rickles one night at Gibson's Steakhouse in Chicago. I sent a round of drinks to his table (it was expensed to Enterprise). He called me over to his table and thanked me and I told him that Kelly's Heroes was my favorite movie. I was expecting him to insult me, but he said thanks.

Kelly's Heroes plays a prominent role in the show. I believe that it is the best World War II movie out there. You can watch it a million times and it never gets old. Try to say that with Saving Private Ryan or even the great Guns From Navarone. Even Gregory Peck gets a little old.

Most of my close friends know that I have been in the past a very big French basher. I don't support any other thier products and refer to them at almost any opportunity as cheese eating surrender monkeys. But this new French President has been slowly turning me around. He current bonifide is that he wants each French School to read the letter written by a Resistance fighter right before he was killed by Nazi occupiers in 1941. The school teachers do not like his influence in the their curriculum. The would prefer to teach thier students about the dumb Americans and mistakes in the war on terror.

The teachers should jump at the opportunity to remind the children about the atrocities faced by their country during the war and countless lives lost by Allied Forces who stormed the beaches to drive the Nazis back over the Maginot Line.

A story about Russian drug dealers night clubs and the NYPD Blue and it was boring and lacked any real action.

When Pigs Fly

This week in Las Vegas a truck pulling a semi load of hogs headed to slaughter overturned on the I-15 and I-215 offramp causing a 7 hour traffic delay. The Nevada Highway Patrol did not want to just flip the trailer over for fear the hogs would just scatter out and cause a larger mess.

This story reminded me of a story Terry Wheller told me when i was a kid. For the record Terry Wheller is a Lake Andes, SD native who worked for my family in the pork processing business in the 70's and continued on with my father at his tractor parts company and retired in 1995. Terry was an accountant by degree but spent many years bouncing around from truck driver and spotter for crop dusters in Texas and Oklahoma. Terry always had a great story to tell even if I had heard it before.

Terry once told me a story about when is was hauling a load of hogs at night and was approaching a train crossing which was not marked with lights. As he was approaching the crossing he noticed a train was coming and to avoid a collision he flipped his truck instead of collide with the train. Due to the rollover pigs were laying all over the place. The local sheriff who responded to the accident decided it was best to put many of the pigs out of their misery and pulled out his service revolver out and starting his own roadside slaughterhouse.

I guess the Nevada Highway Patrol didn't want to waste the bullets.

It is a well versed adage in my family, my father probably lifted the saying from somewhere, that it is not news until you read it. I just read the Friday USA Today and they had a story about the Forbes 400. The writer made a big part of the story that 270 of the 400 are self made men. It then mentions as persons who were self made, Sheldon Adelson the son of poor immigrants and the Google boys. The next name shocked me: Bill Gates.

I guess the writer did not research their story very well. I remembered from reading the Gates biography like 10 years ago that his father was a big shot lawyer in Seattle. So I begin my research on wikapedia. The first two sentences are provided below.

William Henry Gates III was born in Seattle, Washington to William H. Gates, Jr. (now Sr.) and Mary Maxwell Gates. His family was wealthy; his father was a prominent lawyer, his mother served on the board of directors for First Interstate Bank and the United Way, and her father, J. W. Maxwell, was a national bank president.

Sounds like a real Horatio Alger story to me. I now remember the story were Bill put himself through Harvard by sweeping floors and cleaning toilets and working nights at Dunkin Donuts.

One of the victims is now in the hospital with a heart attack. OJ may have dodged a bullet in a gruesome double homicide 13 years ago. Now it appears a heart attack as a result of the robbery could put him in a jail out in the desert for the rest of his life.
